Gear shift cables

What are they?

Gear shift cables , along with gear levers, are crucial mechanical components of the manual transmission system of cars.

Gear shift cables are typically made of a flexible inner steel wire and a reinforced plastic or rubber outer sheath that reduces friction.

There are mainly two types of gear cables:

Single gear shift cable
Double gear shift cable

What are they for?

Gear shift cables are components of the gear shift and transmission system and are complementary to the gear levers.

The gear lever is the instrument used to select the desired gear and is the direct interface between the driver and the transmission system.

Its function is to send the gear shift command to the transmission mechanism.

Gear shift cables, on the other hand, physically transfer movements of the gear lever to the transmission box and allow gears to be selected or engaged.

Attention:

Gear shift cables and levers should be checked regularly. A broken gear shift cable could render the derailleur completely inoperable.
Worn cables can cause harsh shifting, while stretched or poorly adjusted cables can lead to skipping gears.
Abnormal noises or stiffness detected during gear changes could indicate excessive friction in the cables or incorrectly lubricated lever components.
Gear shift cables can become encrusted or damaged by external agents (especially in winter or by salt). This can compromise the functionality of the cables.
Sometimes problems don’t directly involve the cables, but the joints between the lever and the cables, which can loosen, wear, or break. The main symptoms are excessive play in the gear lever, clicking, or strange noises coming from the lever area.

Periodically check the integrity of the cables or sheaths. Worn or damaged cables cause inaccuracy and difficulty shifting.
Check cable tension periodically to avoid erratic movement. Continuous traction and pressure can shorten or deform the cables, compromising the movement and efficiency of the gear shift.
To ensure proper lubrication and reduce cable friction, apply specific lubricants regularly. Without sufficient lubrication, gear shifting problems may occur.
