Swing Arms

What are they?

Suspension arms are the connecting parts between the wheels and the bodywork and are considered road safety components. They are part of the steering geometry, along with shock absorbers, stabilizer bars, and stabilizer linkages. Together with the tires and suspension, they are responsible for the vehicle’s road holding.
These are the components of the chassis that are subjected to the highest stresses on the car.
The shape and materials of the suspension arms depend on the overall design of the car, and usually those at the rear have a simpler geometry.
The control arms can be longitudinal or transverse. The longitudinal ones require the use of stabilizer bars for greater stability.

The materials used for the production of an arm can be different:

Stamped steel
Cast iron
Aluminum
Sheet metal

The number and shape of the arms is strictly linked to the type of suspension adopted by the parent company:

McPherson

This is the most common and simplest type of suspension layout. It features a single lower wishbone per wheel (e.g., Fiat 500, Punto, Panda, Ford Focus).

Quadrilateral

It features two wishbones, a smaller upper one and a larger lower one. Common in high-performance and sports cars. Their A-shaped shape gives rise to their name, A-Arm or Double Wishbone. These suspensions ensure the car maintains proper camber even when the wheel goes over a bump or the car is leaning into a sharp turn.

Multilink

The best possible type of suspension with a multi-link design, but very complex and expensive. It is generally adopted by German manufacturers (Mercedes Benz, Volkswagen, and BMW). Historically, it was used for the rear of the car, but is starting to be used for the front as well. It provides better road holding and maximum driving comfort.

What are they for?

Structurally, the arms connect the wheel to the frame via silent blocks and the joint. The silent blocks are made of rubber and metal and are positioned on the side of the frame, while the joint is positioned on the wheel side. The silent blocks ensure the arm’s flexibility, while the joint allows the wheel to move.
The proper functioning of shock absorbers and the entire suspension component group is directly related to the functioning of the control arms. Their task is to transmit loads, braking torque, and traction forces in all directions.
Since they absorb all the stresses of the vehicle’s operation, silent blocks are the components most subject to wear. When the rubber deteriorates, it loses elasticity and the function of the control arm is compromised.

Attention:
• Even a slightly damaged control arm can be very dangerous, especially when the vehicle is in motion. For this reason, Original Birth recommends periodic checks on the control arms to ensure their integrity and full functionality.
• Improper operation of the arms could cause abnormal tire wear.
• Opting for a cast iron arm on a car that originally had a steel one may seem economically advantageous but it would be risky because it is not suitable for the load studied in the design.
• One of the most common warning signs of a suspension arm’s condition is noise. Noises can be heard even when simply turning the steering wheel or even when the car is stationary. Other malfunction indicators may include: wheel alignment failure, instability and the vehicle’s inability to maintain its trajectory, or front tire wear on one side.
• Loud noise from the arm may be due to a blocked joint, which could cause poor stability and the wheels to lock.
• Any breakage of the silent blocks compromises the vehicle’s handling, comfort, and driving safety. These problems are identifiable when strong vibrations are felt.

icona Tips

• Suspension arms should always be replaced in pairs to ensure correct operation.
• Improper assembly could compromise the correct life of the new arm installed.
• It is recommended not to tighten the frame bolts while the front wheels are still suspended.
• Once the replacement has been carried out, it is good practice to carry out the wheel alignment, as the operations carried out can easily alter the correct position of the suspension and consequently the set-up of the car.

Why choose Original Birth
