Expansion vessel

What is it?

The expansion tank is a plastic container that collects the coolant that leaks from the radiator when the engine is hot and the pressure inside the radiator is high.

When the engine is cold and the pressure is low, the fluid returns to the circuit. It gets its name from the fact that it contains a liquid that tends to expand after the engine warms up.

It is always positioned in the upper part of the engine, and is connected with a flexible tube to the radiator nozzle.

The vessel is filled up to a certain level and the return tube is always positioned below the liquid level to prevent air from being sucked into the circuit.

What is it for?

The most important function of the expansion tank is its regulating function; it absorbs excess fluid during expansion and regulates the pressure of the cooling system via the reservoir cap.

The cap tightly seals the tank, allowing the liquid to reach a higher-than-atmospheric pressure, thus raising the boiling point. Secondly, it allows the maximum pressure to be relieved, with the aid of a small tube, directly into the expansion tank that vents the water.

Each cap displays a specific pressure value for each engine and is established by the manufacturer. The cap valve opens when the system pressure exceeds the safety value.

The reservoir also allows for filling and topping up the coolant, monitoring the coolant level (min and max) and its condition. It supplies the system with coolant from the bottom. From the top, a return tube allows the coolant to return to the reservoir. It always displays two values.

Attention:

The tanks must be checked periodically as they are subject to thermal stress and vibration, as well as to the aging of the plastic. A damaged tank could lead to engine overheating, causing serious damage.
Signs of a faulty expansion tank include: the smell of antifreeze inside the passenger compartment, increased fluid consumption, and water leaks.
Always change the cap! A damaged cap negatively affects the correct functioning of the cooling circuit.
Always use the cap with the pressure defined by the manufacturer. Installing an unsuitable cap could cause a delay in opening and not equalize excessive pressure.
A faulty head gasket also has a negative impact on the radiator pan, as it allows oil to leak into the cooling circuit, which in turn causes corrosion on the rubber hoses and plastic tank.

Use only the coolant recommended by the manufacturer. Using the wrong coolant can damage seals and hoses and reduce the life of the reservoir.
It’s recommended to have the tank replaced by a workshop, as the coolant needs to be drained and refilled. To avoid air bubbles in the circuit, scale, rust, and oily deposits, you should rely on professionals.
Failure to replace the coolant and clean the circuit could cause the cap vent to clog, creating enough pressure to cause the reservoir to rupture.
Pay attention to the color of the coolant, the color is basically an indicator of leaks in the cooling circuit.
